Who or What is the Holy Spirit?

Preacher:
Passage: Romans 8:1-17
Service Type:

In Romans 7:21-24, the Apostle Paul writes, 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Paul’s answer shows up in Romans 8. The entire chapter is about the answer to the dilemma we face as human beings – that powerless, impotent kind of Christianity which keeps us from living the kind of life God wants us to live. The answer is bound up in the power source of our faith. Jesus says it this way in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power the Holy Spirit comes on you.” The Greek word for power is “dunamis” (dynamite). In other words, we receive dynamic power in our lives when the Holy Spirit comes upon us.

Who or what is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is God. More specifically, the Holy Spirit is God’s involved, imminent presence in our world and in our lives.

In this message, we briefly look at 8 things the Holy Spirit does. The Holy Spirit beckon, convicts, transforms, sanctifies, comforts, guides, equips, and empowers.

Lastly, we will look at the Trinity and ask, “How do we make sense of one God fully existing in three different ways?”
